Free Water Testing – Kanabec County Public Health – Kanabec Soil And Water Conservation District

Kanabec County Health has received funds from the Minnesota Department of Health to ensure safe drinking water for private well users. It’s recommended that private well users test their drinking water every year for nitrate and coliform bacteria and at least once for arsenic, manganese, and lead. Both natural sources and human activities can contaminate well water and cause short-term or long-term health effects. Testing your well water is the only way to detect most of the common contaminants in Minnesota groundwater; you cannot taste, see, or smell most contaminants.

Program Details

  • Promotes well-water testing for eligible homes who rely on a private well as their primary drinking source.
  • Will test water for five common contaminants (arsenic, coliform bacteria, lead, manganese, and nitrate).
  • May provide financial assistance to address dangerous levels of any of these detected contaminants and water-quality issues for eligible households.

Eligibility

  • The private well must be the household’s main source of drinking water.
  • No Well testing done in last 2 years.
  • Priorities will be given to households with:
    • Children under the age of 1
    • Pregnant women
    • Residents age 65+
    • Low Income Households
    • Veterans
    • First 10 homes in each township
  • Up to 200 homes in Kanabec County
  • Process

To find out if you are eligible and/or fill out an application please come into our offices at: 905 E Forest Ave., Suite 127

If eligibility is determined, you will receive a test kit and instruction sheet. Return the well water sample to Kanabec County Community Health no later than 10:00a on Tuesday or Thursday. Results of the test will be sent to you and to Kanabec County Community Health. We will reach out to you to discuss results and possible mitigation options-based household income guidelines.

Possible Mitigation

  • Reverse osmosis installation
  • Well repair
  • Other mitigation efforts as needed

Mitigation efforts may be free or reduced cost based on income.
